WHY YOGA with Sharon

WHY YOGA?
A letter to those of you who have never tried it or perhaps have little to no interest in trying.

Hi. Many of you know me. Many of you know me well! For those of you that I haven’t seen in a while or may not know, I have been teaching a lot of yoga lately after getting certified last May. After our Month of Yoga in March at PT Fitness, I have come to realize that I have a true passion for intruding this yoga practice (they call it practice just like any other thing you constantly work at **) to people who have never experienced it before. You could say it’s my current mission or calling or purpose. It is screaming at me, and I have to do whatever is in my power to urge you to give it a shot.

When I talk to clients about trying yoga for the first time, some simply think it’s not for them because they won’t get a good workout, it looks too easy, or won’t benefit them. I can assure you, all of those things are inaccurate.

My yoga teacher always says “it’s not hard, but it’s not easy.” (LOL I love that so much)

But the most common responses (or arguments) that I hear are different : “I’m not flexible enough to do yoga”. Or I’ve heard people discuss fears of looking foolish or not interested because “it’s for skinny girls.” I don’t blame them- With all of the images that we see in social media and magazines these days, it does seem like that! You don’t get to see those girls in their first class looking around the room at what everyone else is doing; you don’t get to see the staging it took to get that perfect photo. Like so many other aspects of the social media fitness world, you see abs, photoshopped legs, and perfect pony tails. (can I get an eye roll please!)

To shift the conversation a bit, the most important thing that you don’t get to see is the transformation of the body AND mind of someone who practices regularly over time.

When we have preconceived notions about something (ie. yoga, meditation), it is difficult to shift your perception of that thing. If you’ve never been exposed to a different side to something, why would you even consider changing your opinion? That other side doesn’t even exist to you.

If you’ve only ever seen yoga in the way of skinny girls in yoga pants in pretzel poses, I’m here to shine a light on the side of yoga that you don’t regularly see from the outside. I’m here to encourage you to explore a side of health and fitness that could potentially change your life.

I heard this somewhere and can’t take credit for it:
“Many people continue doing yoga for different reasons than why they started.”
Think about it for a sec.

To say “don’t be scared!” is silly because trying something new is always a little scary.

Love,
Sharon

p.s. If you are already in our PT Fitness family, you have such an advantage to give this yoga thing a shot. With our community, you can take a lot of the fear out of trying it for the first time simply because you know me! Give me a chance to let me show you that yoga actually IS for you. If you are not in our community and you somehow came across this letter, please know that it is addressed to you, too.
